About Anxiety in Children – Parent Workshop @ Dunsandel School on Thursday 12 September,  600-730pm
Anxiety in children is increasingly being reported by schools across the Canterbury region. This Parent Education Workshop will focus on defining normal developmental anxiety, when to consider anxiety as a problem for children, and understanding the reasons for it. We will also discuss helpful strategies that parents can use to manage their children’s anxiety. This workshop will be run by Ursula McCulloch (Clinical Psychologist) from the School Based Mental Health Team, in the CDHB’s Child, Adolescent & Family Mental Health Services.

Building Resilience in Children- Parent Workshop @ Dunsandel School on Tuesday 22 October, 600-730pm
This workshop, Building Resilience in Children, will explore strategies to help children develop their resilience in order to manage better when faced with challenges. This involves developing a positive view of themselves, the capacity to manage strong feelings and impulses and assisting them to make realistic plans and take steps to carry them out – problem solving. It will be discussion based, and there will be opportunity for parents to ask questions and talk about strategies. This workshop will also be run by Ursula McCulloch, a clinical psychologist with many years’ experience in working with children, based with the School Based Mental Health Team.

Our School vision is:

CONFIDENT AND CONNECTED LIFELONG LEARNERS WHO HAVE PRIDE.

P = Participate. We want our children to Participate and for school Participate means Join In.
R = Respect. We want our children to show Respect and for our school Respect means Treat Others like you would like to be Treated.

I = Initiative. We want our children to show Initiative and for our children Initiative means Think for Yourself.
D = Determined. We want our children to be Determined and for our school Determined means Try Hard and Don’t Give Up.
E = Excellence. We want our children to strive for Excellence and for our school Excellence means Do your Best.

At the end of 2015 I asked the Year 6 children to write the introduction for our  Charter and this is what they came up with as a group –
“Our school is all about our PRIDE values. Each letter in the word PRIDE stands for a different value, we think is important. We all display these letters in different ways; on the sports field, in the classroom and when we are in our community. These letters hold us and link us together as a family. We are determined to be better people and to do the very best we can at all times.
We are country kids, we are the hub, we are here and now, with a proud history behind us. We all have a part to play, a job to do and we do it with PRIDE.

We know that we can take these values with us when we leave our school and they will be with us forever, each of us helping make the world a kind and better place.”

They were also asked to write down the words that describe our school to them – these are shown in this Wordle.

I am proud to be the Principal of our school and it is an honour to be part of the Dunsandel School community. If you would like further information about our school please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards,
Dave Robinson – Principal
