Lions Basketball 2024.
A reminder the games are on a Monday afternoon and there is a commitment from parents to get their children to the games which are held at the Selwyn Sports Centre. For this programme to work for our players we do need parents to be responsible for the teams on game day. We will have two teams in 2024.
The competition starts on Monday 20 May 2024 – games are held between 330pm -700pm.
We have Lions basketball singlets for our players; these will be distributed before the first game and are to be worn at the games only. All players must wear a mouthguard – please ensure you have this sorted before the first games. Players won’t be allowed to play without a mouthguard.
Cost per player will be $70.
FROM SELWYN BASKETBALL
Competition Format:
- A twelve week competition running over Terms 2 & 3.
- Teams will play 2 games per afternoon, with a rest game in between.
- 4/5 Players per team, 3 on the court and 1 substitution (we recommend a substitution every dead ball)
- 12 Minute running clock game
- Shortened court – Ideally looking to play on a shortened court with 2 baskets to simulate transition aspects of 5 v 5, although due to resourcing and needing portable hoops to create the short courts we may have to play 3 x 3 rules on a half-court looking to score in the same basket for this season alone.
- All games will have a referee provided. Refs are a vital part of our game and we will be working with junior refs and training them during these games. A senior referee will oversee games. We appreciate your understanding that no referee will get it right all the time and that all our referees will be working hard to improve their skills every week.
Rules of Note:
- ALL PLAYERS MUST WEAR MOUTHGUARDS
- Clearing – After a shot attempt or made basket the ball must be cleared behind the three-point line before you can score.
- Dead ball – After every dead ball, the ball is checked at the top of the Arc.
- No coaching during the game
- Scoring – Inside the Arc is worth 1 point, outside the Arc is worth 2 points.
- Foul shots – If you are fouled in the act of shooting you get a single free throw worth 1 point (2 if you shoot from behind the Arc).
- Each team is to wear a consistent uniform, preferably numbered (we can supply some bibs)
- All other traditional rules of basketball remain the same.
- We follow all the basic rules of basketball, however this is about the players learning and development, so some allowances may be made, dependant on player and team ability.
